Another Strategic Corridor! Development Of The Trans-Afghan Railway, Linking The Sino-Georgian-Ukrainian Railway With The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor
Mar 07, 2025| The Trans-Afghanistan Railway is 573 kilometres long and will pass through Termez in Uzbekistan, Mazar-e-Sharif and Logar in Afghanistan, and through Peshawar to Pakistan. The cost of the project is estimated to be between $4.8 billion and $6 billion, and the planned annual freight volume will be 20 million tonnes. In terms of gauge, it is 1520mm wide gauge for UAE and Afghanistan and 1676mm wide gauge for Pakistan. Previously, a 1520mm + 1676mm gauge scheme was planned, but now based on the Sino-Georgian-Uzbekistan Railway and the China-Pakistan Railway, a 1435mm standard gauge scheme is included in the discussions.

Regional linkage: docking in Jiwu and China-Pakistan Economic Corridor Trans-Afghanistan Railway to the north in Samarkand or Kagan to dock the western extension of Jiwu Railway, to the south in Peshawar to dock the Pakistani railway network, which can be directly to Gwadar Port. The strategic significance of the Trans-Afghanistan Railway is self-evident, which will provide landlocked countries in Central Asia with convenient access to the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean, greatly shortening the time of cargo transport and reducing logistics costs; at the same time, the line through Afghanistan is expected to help rebuild the local economy and promote regional stability and prosperity.

The greater value of the trans-Afghan railway lies in its connectivity effect. The China-Japan-Ukraine railway was launched in December 2024 as a key project under the Belt and Road Initiative. The railway connects China's Xinjiang with Central Asia, while a southward extension of the Trans-Afghanistan Railway will connect it to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Since its launch in 2013, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor has seen the completion of several ports and road projects, which, when linked to the Trans-Afghanistan Railway, will form a complete transport chain from western China to South Asia. This 'trinity' strategic layout will not only enhance the efficiency of China's trade with Central and South Asia, but could also reshape the regional geo-economic landscape.
