Do you know -Cant
May 23, 2025| A fine acronym of a very important factor affects the design of the alignment of Railways , it's the Cant , there are some technical terms that explain the cant in short :-
*Cant* : is amount by which one running rail is raised above the other running rail. it can be +ve or -ve according to which one of the inner and outer rails is above the other one. Negative cant is unavoidable at switches and crossings on a contend main line where the turnout is curving in the opposite direction to the main line , in certain cases , on the plain immediately adjoining a turnout.
*Equilibrium Cant: at which the vehicle will have a resultant force normal to the running plan.
*Cant Excess : difference between applied cant and a lower equilibrium Cant.
*Cant Deficiency* : is the difference between applied cant and a higher equilibrium Cant.
