Do you know this about wing rails?

Dec 19, 2023|

The wing rail is an important part of the switch, located on both sides of the core rail. Its function is to protect the locomotive wheels from passing safely at the intersection of the rails. Connect the center rail and tip rail to act as lateral support. The wing rails are also paved with curbs to guide the wheels in and out of the switches to ensure that the wheels can turn smoothly at the switches. Through the setting of wing rails, stable support and guidance can be provided to ensure the safe operation of trains at switches.

The function of the wing rail is to ensure that the locomotive wheels safely pass through the intersection of two rails. The role of the wing rail is dual. In addition to guiding the wheel rim into the frog rim groove, it also plays a role in supporting the wheel when the wheel transitions through the "harmful space" to the center rail before it fully carries the wheel.

The wing rail guides the wheel pair forward from the toe end to the throat; in the harmful space line segment, although the wing rail bears the load of the wheel pair, there is no gauge line guidance, and its guide line is in the area where the wing rail is transferred to the center rail. The running line of the wheelset is controlled by the guard rail; the tail of the wing rail from the tip of the center rail, that is, the transition section of the wing rail, mainly plays a protective and auxiliary role. The guidance and load of the wheelset are mainly borne by the center rail.
