Turnout is a big family, and the most common is ordinary single turnout. It consists of three units: switch, connecting part, frog and guard rail. The switch includes base rail, switch rail and switch machinery. When the rolling stock is to turn from track a to track B, operate the switch machine to move the switch rail to the position. The switch rail 1 is close to the base rail 1, and the switch rail 2 is separated from the base rail 2. In this way, track B is opened, track a is closed, and the rolling stock enters the connecting part and transitions to the frog and guard rail unit along the guide curve rail. This unit includes fixed frog core, wing rail and guard rail, which is used to protect the wheel from passing through the intersection of two tracks.
When the wheel passes through the frog, there is a gap between the narrowest part of the two wing rails and the most tip of the frog center, which is the harmful space of the turnout. When the wheel passes here, it may be derailed due to wrong frog groove. This is the purpose of setting the guard rail, which is to forcibly guide the running direction of the wheels. Nevertheless, the existence of this harmful space limits the speed of the train passing through the turnout, which is very unfavorable to the operation of high-speed trains.
The fundamental way to solve the harmful space of turnout is, of course, to eliminate the harmful space. Since the ordinary turnout cannot be achieved, it is necessary to develop a special turnout - movable core rail turnout.
The main feature of the movable core rail is that the frog core rail can be plate moved. When we want to open a track in a certain direction, the frog center rail of the movable center rail is close to the wing rail consistent with the opening direction and separated from the other wing rail. In this way, the harmful space of the ordinary turnout does not exist. Practice has proved that the harmful space of turnout is eliminated, the driving is more stable and the speed limit of crossing turnout is small, so it is especially suitable for lines with large traffic volume and need to run high-speed trains.
